Departure from Quito

Pick up at your hotel and departure northbound on the Pan-American Highway. During the trip (2 hours), you will travel through Andean landscapes with views of volcanoes such as Cayambe and Imbabura. Stop at the Mitad del Mundo monument or panoramic viewpoint, depending on your preference.

Arrival in Otavalo Poncho Square

Arrival at the famous indigenous market in Otavalo, the largest and most colorful in South America. Free time to explore Poncho Square and its surroundings. Discover an impressive variety of handcrafted products: tapestries and textiles woven on traditional looms, alpaca wool ponchos, sweaters, scarves, bags, silver jewelry with semi-precious stones, hand-painted ceramics, naive paintings.

Animal Market (Optional - Saturdays only)

If the tour is on a Saturday, there is the possibility of visiting the animal market where local farmers trade cattle, pigs, guinea pigs, chickens, and other animals in a scene that has not changed in centuries.

Lunch

Lunch at a local restaurant serving traditional Andean cuisine. Sample typical dishes such as hornado (roast pork), fritada, locro de papas (potato stew), or fresh trout. Option to try the traditional morocho (sweet corn drink) or chicha de jora.

Quilotoa and Volcano Route

Travel along the spectacular Avenue of the Volcanoes to Laguna del Quilotoa, a volcanic crater with turquoise waters. Hike down to the crater (optional). Visit local indigenous communities. Overnight in Latacunga or Riobamba..

Cuicocha Lagoon

Transfer to the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve (30 minutes from Otavalo). Arrival at Cuicocha Lagoon (“Lago del Cuy” in Kichwa), a spectacular volcanic crater 3 km in diameter at 3,246 meters above sea level.

Cotacachi Village (Optional)

Optional visit to the nearby village of Cotacachi, famous for its high-quality leather goods. Tour of leather goods stores: jackets, bags, belts, shoes, and wallets at very affordable prices.

4:30 p.m.

Return to Quito

Departure back to Quito via the Pan-American Highway. During the trip, last chance to admire the Andean landscape of northern Ecuador as the sun sets over the mountains. Rest stops along the way as needed.

Arrival in Quito

Arrival at the hotel in Quito. End of the tour with bags full of authentic handicrafts and souvenirs of the living culture of Otavalo and the volcanic landscapes of the north.
